The Zoo Crew go back to back for the 9th Round
Reported by HarderFaster

There aren’t many club nights these days that can celebrate a 9th birthday and still claim to be going strong but that’s what the Zoo crew will be up to on the 5th November. There are probably a whole host of reasons why some promotions stay successful and others fail but you can be sure promotion team good looks isn’t one of them (only joking – Ed). If you’re a regular on HF then you’re going to be all too aware of Latex Zebras unashamed promotion techniques and B.S.E’s understated one-liners and remarkable likeness to Gandalf the Grey. No-one at HF Towers wanted to risk an interview with either of them so they got to do each other - a term I’m sure has been heard many times before! Ladies and gents we give you Latex Zebra and B.S.E.
Latex Zebra Interviews B.S.E
What’s been your proudest moment promoting Zoology?
There have been so many I’m not sure I could pin it down to just one but I’ll give it a go . . . I think just getting Zoology off the ground and getting our first party done was a massively proud achievement in its own right, since then getting to meet the hero’s of ours like Altern8 & Man With No Name and having them play for us has filled me with immense pride too but I think proudest of them all is the reception we’ve got over the past nine years from the people in the club. Just sat upstairs at the 414 chatting to random people and them telling me how wicked a night they’re having and how they’ll tell their mates about it when they have no idea I’m one of the promoters, then seeing them back on the dance floor next month.
Why have we lasted so long when many other promotions have vanished?
I think the fact that we have never been a purely Trance, Hard House or Techno night has helped us. When we started RedCaT, You & I all had very different styles so our nights have always been varied and have built progressively. Even with the advent of our themed nights you were always treated to variations on the theme. Coupled that with the fact that we’ve always tried to foster a real house party vibe to our nights and not been afraid to book DJ’s - big or small, that fit with our musical philosophy has, I think, been the main key’s to our success. Well that and a dogged determination not to be beaten
Most memorable set you’ve played?
There have been a few, most recent I think was only a few months ago. You and I were next to each other on the line up so about an hour before the first of us went on we decided to do a back to back and absolutely smashed the granny out of it. Everything dropped just right from progression to style it all flowed perfectly. Another that springs to mind is when I followed Sterling Moss at Zoology Techno, again everything just worked and dropped perfectly but the main reason it sticks in my head is that I had to do the first couple of mixes with the mixer at 90deg while he unplugged all his live equipment. The one that always jumps out at me though is from Milkology when I was in the second room up against D’Marr Ford in the main and thought I’d have little crowd as he was very popular at the time but 10 minutes into my set I’d pretty much emptied the main room and mine was rammed and jumping!
What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen at Zoology?
I’ve seen some pretty strange goings on at Zoology over the years, just last month I saw a guy dancing with a pot plant. I’ve seen many a person holding in depth conversations with the goldfish upstairs but I think the strangest of them all was a guy that was sat upstairs in the chill out area complaining of a tooth ache, he proceeded to reach into his mouth and pull his tooth out . . . odd did not cover it.
If you had to choose one track that sums up Zoology what would it be?
Clichéd and self promoting it may be but I think it has to be Zoology by The Zoologists. Even though its several years old it still encompasses the feel of Zoo for me. It builds, chugging along at the start into the break where its met by a great riff then continues building until it breaks again where a beautiful acid line starts pounding away building into its own little crescendo.
DJs can’t Dance – Discuss.
It’s not that we can’t it’s that most chose not to I’d like to think that I can throw some shapes with the best of them, you on the other hand . . .
B.S.E Interviews Latex Zebra
We’ve had some great DJ names for us over the last 9 years, who’s been your favourite?
Obviously the big names like Wag, Man With No Name and Altern 8 have all been great. In terms of favourite DJ it’s probably Elvis with the set that gained him his residency. The boy delivered! Out of the big names it has to be Altern 8. That was amazing.
How have your musical tastes altered over the past 9 years?
I’m not sure they have much. I still like all the stuff I would played at the first Zoo.
I suppose I started as playing quite Hard stuff then refined it with the Euro sound and then when that became a lot harder to get hold of I went back to my Trance sound, albeit it with a chunky edge. I’ve probably slowed down a bit but I’m still quite happy to bang it out from time to time.
We’ve done many a team up with other parties, if you could team up with any party in the world who would it be?
I was on holiday for the Party Proactive team up so wouldn’t mind doing that again. We never did a proper team up with Logic, that would have been cool. Other than that, from the newer parties out there someone like Lost Dawn or Odyessy seem to have similar ‘House Party’ vibes to them (even though I’ve not been) so I imagine that would work well.
What had the biggest influence on you when we were deciding what kind of party Zoology should be?
Club UK was always the vibe I wanted. No hassle on the door, no trouble in the club (unless you’re counting 100 Police Officers turning up at UK one night trouble) and a mixture of music in each room. Times that by three rooms and it was perfect. Really pleased that we have a former UK stalwart Marc French coming to do a Pop Art room set for us for the Birthday. That’s just about made my (promoting) year!
What’s been you biggest faux pas at Zoology?
How long have we got? Fortunately most of my cock ups have been for other promotions . . . (Is that fortunate?) I’ve done the obvious taking the needle off the track that was playing a couple of times. I even did it with the same tune once having just managed to make everyone think I was being all tricksy the first time. Another would be (and I don’t recall this well) us back2backing and me fiddling with the CDJ or Vinyl whilst you where in the mix and making a God awful racket! I’m sorry about that . . . Still (though not sorry about the stink you left in the DJ booth one time - Ed )
What do you have to say to people who’ve not been to a Zoology yet?
Without wanting to end on a negative . . . With so many venues closing down and promotions stopping there may well be a limited amount of Zoology’s left. It could be 12, could be 5 could be 50! We just don’t know. We’ve always had great feedback and, I would like to think, have been a part in a certain era of Clubbing. Wouldn’t you be gutted if you never tried it once before it stopped?
I could leave the last word to Latex Zebra but we’d be here all night so I’ll just say this: Zoology will be 9, if you’ve not been before this will probably be a good one to start.

9, not a humongous number by today’s standards but in
the standard of club events 9 years is quite a feat.
How have we got this far? Using such diverse elements as:
fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical devotion
to the Pope…
Ok maybe none of those things.
Maybe it’s because we love it, maybe it’s because we book
DJs that love it and maybe it’s because people come along and
love it.
Yeah, that’ll do.
So for Zoolo9y (see what we did there) we have a lovely line
up for you with Zoology and Alumni favorite Marc French
coming along to play a set of… Well I don’t want to spoil the
surprise but lovers of Trance in the early years (before it went
mad in the late 90’s) are sure to be in for a treat.
Also we have a special extended 3 way b2b with M.D.A &
Spherical teaming up with Latex Zebra for a set that will be a
right old mix bag of sounds. Due to play together at last years
HF Christmas Party (but not done due to poor LZ having to
look after a sickly family) we’re this set will be worth the 11
month wait!
Last but not least we have Hardstyle guru Dean Zone coming
to close the party with some big Euro Bangers. (Finally a
Fireworks night reference)
Not enough? OK, have a selection of our long standing
residents B.S.E, Markus Buhmann, DJ Forth and RedCaT. Yes
that’s right, RedCaT is back in town for the birthday. Our
beloved long lost resident will be dishing out party tunes old
and new of a quality that will make you hope he doesn’t wait
until our 10th Birthday to show up again.
Expect a well dressed club, the usual party bags and more
than likely the famous 414 Punch!
Starting at 11 you’ll be able to do your bonfire night
shenanigans and then blow the night right up at Zoo, you
might even get to see a few late displays from the roof garden
too.
See you there, this one is gonna be huge!
