Neutrino collides with the Halcyon Warehouse Party
Reported by Tara

DJ Neutrino has been moving faster than the speed of light since he first hit London running. Having already played hard dance at the capital’s top clubs, he was converted to the psychedelic side by Astrix’s ‘Eye to Eye’ album, which inspired him to start his own psy brand, A.T.A.R.I. Project and focus on producing and playing psy trance. It’s therefore only fitting that he’s going to be playing on the same line-up as Astrix at the Halcyon Warehouse Party on Friday 19 November, where’s he’s in the AlphaOmega room alongside Hallucinogen, Prometheus, Logica, Mood Deluxe, Logica, Avalon and Liquid Ross...
It’s been 18 months since I first interviewed Dino Ciancamerla aka DJ Neutrino in May 2009, just before the launch of his promotion A.T.A.R.I. Project’s first event. So the first thing I want to know when we finally sit down with a coffee at Café Nero is, what has he been up to over this time?
“After our launch event we took some time to plot and plan our next event, which we called The Crystal Experience. We collaborated with Israeli record label Synthezion Records. We went all out on this event with a huge line up, including Ace Ventura, Avalon (who launched his most recent album) and Rastaliens, as well as London-based record label Further Progressions who hosted the progressive room. The event got great feedback and an awesome review. People were saying that it was one of the best indoor club events they’d ever been to. Global Village Productions did a magnificent job with the décor as usual.”
“Other than The Crystal Experience A.T.A.R.I Project has been hosting the progressive psy floor at my other brand called Babies Events; which is a slightly more commercial mini-festival type brand. As the clubbing scene is so competitive with so many events we have decided to rather put our all into doing one very high quality event a year, and then team up with other brands to keep our brand out there and alive. I feel it’s the best way to do it. Promoting has become very difficult these days, it’s hard to just break even. I don’t know how people make money!”
He finally stops to take a breath and a sip of coffee, then continues: “Our brand is a high quality psy brand. We would rather have an amazing looking and sounding event that people talk about, than cut back on production to make a bit of money. I’m talking with some big names in SA to take Babies Events and A.T.A.R.I Project to Capetown. That’s probably the next step, hopefully in February or March next year. The scene is huge over there.”
Definitely the best time to get out of London, we both agree. So what else does he have on the horizon? “Well, I’m hopefully doing a record label some time in the future. Although I want to take things in my stride and not push things… The last 18 months have been crazy! From a DJ perspective, things have really started to pick up a lot. I’ve started playing at a few squat parties to keep my name out there and meet more people in the scene. I recently enjoyed playing for Alchemy Records for the first time a couple of months ago. I enjoy the amount of gigs I’ve got at the moment. In August I played every weekend in the month and in November I’m also playing every weekend — I’ve got AuralPhonix, Tranceluscent Spirits and Halcyon and in November alone along with a few other smaller gigs!”
That is indeed one hectic DJ schedule! So how does he juggle that with promoting, I wonder? “It’s a challenge, but I try not to overwhelm myself with trying to do too many events. Quality over quantity. We have done three Babies Events this year: May Babies was a big success with over 500 people. We had been doing it in a pub with the most amazing beer garden, but the pub changed ownership and we lost the venue. It was the ultimate venue and they loved us because we made them a fortune! It’s hard to find a venue in London where you can play music outside, so we attempted the Dex Club. We did OK with around 450 people, good for a change of venue, but it didn’t have a Babies event feel. It’s supposed to be about the outdoor festival vibe, and taking it to the Terrace didn’t have the right feel. Next year we’re planning on doing something big outside of London and we are already in talks with some large brands. But you will have to wait and see what come of that. It seems these days you have to go that far out of London not to get closed down.”
From our last interview I recall that he’s also passionate about production, how’s that going? “Production is going slowly due to everything else being so manic. But I’ve got three tracks at the moment that are nearly finished together with Stephan Hoffman (Devine Machine) and will hopefully be ready by the end of the year for an EP. That will be my first release. I’ve also done a few psy remixes of some classic trance tracks including System F— ‘Out of the Blue’, Solar Stone — ‘Seven Cities’ and Fat Boy Slim — ‘Right Here, Right Now’. These all unreleased bootlegs which I did for more nostalgic reasons than anything else — check out my MySpace for free downloads . Production is going to now become my main focus, it’s what counts the most. It’s the only thing that will push me to the next level I want to go to. Just being a DJ doesn’t cut it any more, you have to produce!”
So what inspired him on the production side of things then? “I’m very much into the prog side of things. My big influences are Ace Ventura and Gaudium and anything on Iboga, Iono and Spin Twist & Zenon Records.”
In the last year Dino’s also started playing internationally. I want details! “Yes, last New Year’s I was booked to headline a festival in Capetown called Boomerang. It’s the only competitor to Vortex/Resonance and put on by Mind Cultivation Recordings. London’s DJ Mif (half of Dejenga) also played. I had the most amazing set time — 9pm on the first night! And I made the transition from prog to full on just as the sun went down. It was one of the best experiences I’ve had yet! So far for me nothing beats Capetown parties!”
“I’ve been booked to play a big festival in Johannesburg in March called the Tswaing Crater Gathering Festival, which is going to be held in one of the oldest meteor craters in the world. It’s another international gig so really cool for me. So it’s another tour as I’ll playing at a few other events in Capetown as well.”
Given how much Dino has achieved in a competitively short time, I’m curious about what first inspired him to get involved in the dance scene. Unlike most DJ/producers I’ve met, it turns out he actually started trying to make music before he started playing it out. “I started to get into producing music before I even went clubbing! At the age of 16 I was messing around with Dance EJ and Fruity Loops. I’d never been to a club but I grew to love dance music. The track by System F ‘Out of the Blue’ got me into the uplifting trance scene then I went into a hard house/dance phase that lasted until I was about 21. I decided that the only thing that could be better than standing on the dancefloor must be being a DJ and playing to the crowd, so that’s when I decided to become a DJ. I moved to Dublin, got myself turntables and learned to DJ for a year.”
“Then I moved to London, and at that stage I was still playing trance and hard house, but I already knew that psy trance was my passion. Astrix’s ‘Eye to Eye’ was the album that got me into psy trance — it completely sold me and even today I still agree!”
“Anyway, I started DJing in London and played at all the major clubs: MOS, the Fridge, SeOne etc. But they don’t matter to me any more because I decided I wanted to get into the psy scene and dropped the other bits to focus on that. It prompted me to start my own event/brand so I could realise my visions and put on the highest quality events possible.”
He finally slows down for some more coffee so I can ask one of the questions I’m keen to have answered: as someone who’s regularly out and about in the London dance scene, I want to know what the best parties are to go to right now? “I don’t actually go out!” he laughs. “But my Babies events are the best in London at the moment! No other events in London have all the attributes combined in one place. We have built an awesome following with very little marketing because the events speak for themselves, well so I’m told anyway. I never party at events I’m DJing at — I take my DJing very seriously. I go and DJ and stick around for a few drinks , but can’t party. So I’m looking forward to Spectrum, where I‘m going to party with my friends. I also really enjoy boat parties as they’re something different. Any event with something that stands out I enjoy!”
Given that his day job is as a personal trainer, I suspect it must be hard to juggle that with clubbing — or does it give him energy for the weekends? “It is difficult! I’m very conscious of what I put into my body I’m actually a very spiritual person so conscious of my mental state. It’s inevitably two ends of a scale during the week and the weekend. Then again, it’s all about balance, isn’t it?!”
I’m starting to feel tired just by association. Promoting, DJing and producing can indeed take their toll on your personal life. What does do to unwind—or does he not slow down at all?! “I try and meditate as much as I can. In July I had given up my job, flat and was about to go on a cruise ship for 9 months — then I met my girlfriend Kerry. It’s a funny story as I knew her when I was six years old as we lived next door to each other in Johannesburg. We hadn’t seen or spoken to each other for 19 years! At the May Babies a guy named Shane from Sick Vibez (a new house brand) hosted a floor at my Babies Events. I became friends with him on FaceBook and one day up popped one of his friends, Kerry Dunlop. She’d just moved to London and into Shane’s houseshare. As soon as I saw her pop up as one of his friends I emailed her and asked her if she was THAT Kerry Dunlop… she wrote back ‘Yes I am!’ ”
“We went out for a drink two nights later and it was love at first sight! But this was just before I was supposed to leave... So I cancelled the cruise ship job and found a new place to live. I started my own personal training business and started everything again from scratch… And she’s the girl I’m going to marry! Her mum died last year and she asked her Mum to send her angel feathers. Look!” He pulls two angel wings out from around his neck. “I’ve worn them around my neck for ages! So she believes that her Mum sent her to me!”
Speaking of feathers and birds, I’m guessing he’s pretty excited about playing on the same line-up as production guru Astrix and in the AlphaOmega room alongside Hallucinogen, Prometheus, Mood Deluxe, Logica, Avalon and Liquid Ross at Halcyon on Friday 19 November? “Yes I’m very much looking forward to this event. I’ve not played for Halcyon or AlphaOmega before and I’m sure having the two together is going to produce a top notch event!”
