Sutekh - the God of Chaos - returns to Brixton for Pendragon's Samhain party on 30 October @ JAMM

Reported by Tara / Submitted 20-10-10 12:37

DJ Sutekh has been a stalwart of the UK psy trance scene for a good few years now, so it was inevitable that he'd soon start breaking into fresh international waters. After a busy summer on tour, he's back in Brixton next Saturday night to headline one of the parties that got him into dance music in the first place - Pendragon. We got the lowdown on his Twisting Squelching Growling Organic Mind Altering Trance with a hint of Super Sexy Techno Wobble!

You were last interviewed on here by Andy Forse in May 2008. Are you still the God of Chaos? But seriously, what’s been happening on Planet Sutekh since then?

Hahah well chaos does still seem to follow me these days, not sure if I’m always the one creating though... although I try my best. All is groovy here on Planet Sutekh, life is great, if ya don’t enjoy it don’t do it I say! Plenty of new projects art and music wise are on the horizons, I just gotta keep dodging them pesky humans to achieve them...

Almost four years ago you described your music as “Monsternastic Uberdelic Mind Melting Full Power Avin’ It Psychedelic Nitro Injected Foot Stomping Trance!” Does this describe the current Sutekh sound? How has your music changed and evolved over the years — if at all?

Heheh, yeah I remember that... well it’s still pretty mind melting and definitely stomping. I guess my tastes have matured and been influenced by the travels and wonderful artists I have met and become friends with. I’ve defiantly grown to love a slightly darker more intelligent style, keeping it minimalistic, driving and psychedelic, but always with that Sutekh groove, so how about Twisting Squelching Growling Organic Mind Altering Trance with a hint of Super Sexy Techno Wobble!

As well as playing psy trance you’re also dabbling in techno and minimal. Do you find it hard carrying around so many CD cases and staying abreast of new tunes over different styles, or is it all part of the fun?

Its definitely all part of the fun; I’m fortunate enough to work and surround myself with very talented musicians and artists, so finding great music isn’t hard if you know where to look.

This summer you’ve been a regular on the festival circuit around the UK and in Europe, partying at OZORA, Boom, Waveform and more. What have been your favourite festies this summer and why? Where do you recommend readers head next summer?

This summer has been incredible with some really beautiful experiences and some very colourful characters. I guess the highlights would be Ruigoord in Amsterdam for an amazing solistic party with a great little community; the incredible Fusion festival in Germany for the standard of production and quirky minimal techno and of course getting to play the main stage of OZORA after spending three weeks with the Extra Dimensional Space Agency to build such an incredible dance floor.

Having been out and about all summer, what other DJs and producers have caught your eyes and ears recently?

There’s been lots , too many great moments to remember really! But I definitely remember having a full blown dance out to a great dark psy artist called Mubali in Belgium , a mammoth 6-hour closing techno set by Dnox & Beckers at the Fusion festival, and I’ve also got some great new music from Scorb, Biomechanic (a great new Mutagen records artist ), Antispin, Deviant Species, Xpiral, Whiptongue ... ahh lots, best just to come see me and ask nit Wink

You’re now co-managing Mutagen Records with your long-time partner in crime Matt Kyriakedes aka DJ Mif. Does this really involve sitting around listening to banging psy trance all day, or is there a wee bit more to it than that?

Cor wish I could sit around all day, at the moment we are undergoing a slight reshuffle of ideas and concepts and bringing Mutagen up to become a label to push and promote newer talented artists with intelligent psychedelic deeper music. We are currently working hard on a new style, artwork and the outlook of the label as well working on digital EP releases and tour schedules to promote both the label and artists we find. All is coming very soon...

As a label co-manager, what do you look for in a new act?

Well of course they’ve gotta have some great new well produced music, I like to work with people dedicated to it as well you know. I’m all for synergy and the more artists help with the label the more the label will give back to them as well.

In addition to DJing and helping run a record label, you’re also involved with creating some of the best décor around for Global Village. How did this come about and what exactly do you do?

Yup I’m very privileged to be working for Global Village, I have always had an artistic side and its been really great to get a lot more involved with creating some amazing environments for people to enjoy and feel happy within. I have been working hard on graphic design projects, creating stage designs, flyer designs, backdrop designs, as well as developing some of my own concepts and ideas and along with Jason and Ivy who have taken me into the Global Village family. We are working on some really incredible installations for festivals and clubs across the world.

When we picked you as one to watch in DJmag in 2008 you were just starting to get into producing your own tracks. Have you managed to get any further on this front or do you need more hours in the day?

Yeah it’s been a bit hectic since then with all the traveling, décor installations and label work it all got put on hold for while, but I’ve just invested in a nice new laptop and logic pro, so I think the colder winter evenings are going to be spent getting some of those ideas finished, tweaked and back on track.

Following on from that, what have been the highlights of your music career so far? And where do you hope to take it in the future?

Well there have been too many great moments to mention — gotta love all of it really, if I didn’t I wouldn’t be doing it! Then next step is the all singing all dancing Sutekh 3D audio/visual interactive moving holographic transdimensional décor show...

Who or what has influenced you the most musically over the years? And now?
Groovy basslines, squelchy organic noises and a sense of humour!

If you were stuck on a desert island and could only have 5 albums with you, what would they be?

Ahh that’s the question I was dreading! Hahah errrr, I wouldn’t have albums, I’d have my hardrive!

You win the Euromillions and decide to throw a 3-day festival to celebrate. Where would it be, who would you book to headline and what would you play?

Urgh and I thought the last question was hard! Haha! I’d book all my musical and artistic friends and take them somewhere warm, tropical and beautifull and let them create whatever they want without the limitations of a budget… be great to see what came out of that!

For years you were a resident for Antiworld and in the process played alongside some of the top names in psy trance like Astrix, Infected Mushroom, Xerox & Illumination, Kristian, Skazi, etc. Do you have a favourite memory from back in those days? If Antiworld came back tomorrow, would you play?

Of course I had some amazing moments at Antiworld , it was a huge stepping stone into the scene and was a catalyst for so much more , I met many great friends and learnt a lot, and of course would go back and play. Those parties gave me an opportunity to push music so such a larger audience than the normal underground scene, and to get the chance to play to a sold out Brixton Academy was something really special, sure I’ll never forget that.

You’ve said before that it was going to parties like Pendragon that got you into dance music. It must be quite an achievement for you headlining their party JAMM next Saturday night? Will you be getting there early to hear Mark Sinclair, Beamish, Oberon, Juno, Kito and Andy Secret live or getting there late to focus on your set?

Pendragon was always part of my dance music childhood and it’s always such a privilege to get invited back to play, I’ll be down there I’m sure for most of the night, might even have to get the Halloween costume out as well!

Finally, if a fan sees you at the bar next Saturday night, what should they buy you?

If it’s a fan then I’m buying, everyone else and I’ll have a rum ‘n’ coke!
