Chilean flavours from DJ Ital at Cohesion
Reported by Agnes Klos

Submitted 01-08-11 18:41
Ital is a musician from Chile who started his career 13 years ago as a guitar player, going through several styles of popular music until he finally found his true love and passion: psychedelic trance. In September 2007 he created the first psytrance Chilean label 'Antu Records' (which in Chilean means 'the Sun'). Ital has played in countries all over the world and at such legendary festivals like Boom Festival (Portugal), Universo Paralello Festival (Brazil), Vuuv Festival (Germany), Spirit Base (Austria), Solstice Festival (Netherlands), S.O.L Festival (Czech Republic) and many more. Agnes Klos talked to Ital before his performance at Cohesion on 6th August at Club 414, Brixton.
Hi Daniel, thank you for finding time to answer some questions for the HarderFaster readers. First of all, could you please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background and what you do.
Hi there, hello everybody. Well, I am Daniel from Chile in South America. I’m an engineer in sound, a producer and DJ for the last 14 years. I’m 31 years old now and I dedicate my life to music - it is my real love and passion!!
When did your journey with music begin and how did you get into DJing in the first place?
I have been into the music since I was 14 years old. At 12 I started playing guitar and from there all my life has been around the music. When I was 14 I started DJing at parties at school, college and also private parties at home. I entered the world of the electronic music in 1996, listening to some techno and acid sounds. In 2001 I got the first contact with psytrance music. I liked it so much and felt such a strong connection with the music that after ten years I still dedicate my life to it.
Do you remember the moment you fell in love with psytrance?
Yes, that was in Ecuador the summer of year 2001 in a place call Montañitas. I was travelling around with some friends, looking for some underground parties near the beach, and at that time I was already DJing some psy stuff. It was the first time I listened to this music and I fall in love with it in that moment!!
Who was your biggest influence when you were starting out?
My biggest influence was the old school Goa Trance . . . very psychedelic sounds
You got involved with the production of psytrance music by forming one of the pioneering projects on the local scene 'Metatron' together with your friend Andres Rodillo in 2001. How did the adventure kick off from there?
Well, yes. There is a funny part to that story: I met my friend Andres while travelling in Ecuador. After that we talked about starting to make music together, and after arriving back in Chile, we immediately began. From there we did so much music with our project “Metatron”. However, at that time it was very difficult to release music because we were from Chile, and to contact labels from Europe and other parts of the world was not easy at all. We played a lot every weekend in the underground psy scene in Chile, many parties and some festivals around, rocking from the beginning with our Goa trance style.
After three years working with my friend, I decided to create my solo project that I called ITAL.
How would you describe the Ital sound to someone who has never heard you play before?
Well, Ital music is spiritual music for the world, people and universe. Through my music I would like to send a message to the world where we are living. The message of peace, light and harmony to the people. My mission in life is to give happiness! My style is characterised for being a groove full on with my very own character and style, full of atmospheres, much groove and psychedelia.
Is the name Ital symbolic in any way? Or maybe there is an interesting story behind the choice of that specific name, share it with us please?
Ital is a Rastafarian word that Rastafarians from Africa used in Africa in old times. It is in African language call Patois. Ital means purity in Patois, and Rastafarians used that word to talk about the ital life, ital food, so about the pure life, pure food, etc. The fundamental concept is focused on the expansion of all the purity that surrounds us, canalizing through music all this divine and universal energy that surrounds us to be given and to be projected like sound waves towards our surrounding universe.
What type of an audience are you trying to reach out to with your own production?
To all the universe, because we are all one
Where do you get your inspiration to produce from?
Well, the inspiration comes from nature, my wife, family, friends and all. From the beautiful things and feelings that our world gives us. I’m living now in the mountains in Santiago de Chile, so from there I got a big inspiration for creation, just being connected with nature everyday.
What is your favourite piece of kit in the studio?
Dynaudio monitors, Mac and Virus TI synthesizer.
Since September 2007 you created and began the first Chilean psytrance label ‘Antu Records’. Take us to the beginning of your own label, what is the story behind it?
Well I decide to create my own label because I felt that Chile really needed it. There were not that many labels from South America, only a few like Vagalume Records from Brazil, so it was necessary to expand our message to the world.
Antu in Indian Chilean language means Sun, so the main purpose behind the label when I created it was to expand the light through the music.
How would you describe the ethos behind your label?
Well, very groovy, pumping, fat and psychedelic music! As 'Antu' in the indigenous Chilean language means ‘the Sun’, the purpose and intention of the label is to expand the light and divine energy all over the world through the psytrance music, to connect our selves with our roots and feel our hearts full of spiritual healing.
What are highlights and lowlights of a life as a DJ and label manager?
Well, being a musician is a very nice life. It is a nice job that I really enjoy doing. Being able to give these incredible high vibes to the people is a very good thing for the spirit. Some times you get a little bit tired when you need to travel too much, but is part of the job so I go with it!
Are there any exciting projects on the horizon for Antu Records at the moment that you would like to spread the word about?
Yes, many. At the moment we are releasing the first Progressive psy from Artists Aho, and many new EPs will come. Some new compilations also on the way so I hope people are looking forward to it.
You are also a part of 'Free-Spirit records', tell us more about it.
Yes I am, I’m a friend of Jay Om who is a label manager of Free-Spirit. I did my second album with their label and it was called “The World of Spirit Plants”.
Two years ago I started working with friends from other sides of the world, which was truly nice. I think and feel that to grow up in art such as music, we need to support each other with friends from other parts of this amazing globe to actually make it happen!
How do you think the scene in Chile is different to the UK?
The scene in Chile is very underground compared with the UK. Many small parties but people really want to dance and enjoy the psychedelic life. We also have some festivals that will grow in the future.
Could you name your top 5 tracks of all times that in your opinion would rock the dancefloor at any place in the world?
1. Ital – Leyendas
2. Ital – Vibration
3. Ital – Protection
4. Ital – Hyper Freq
5. Ital – Todo Beleza
We are in the middle of the festival season. Which festival has been the most memorable one till now and which ones are you looking forward to in 2011?
Well, my favourite has been always Universo Paralello in Brazil, such amazing atmosphere and high energy in the beach of Bahia.
You will be playing at Cohesion on 6th August, is it going to be the first time for you at that gig and what can we expect from your performance?
Wow, it will be amazing, very looking forward for it. Also, the promoters and DJs themselves, Prozak and Sati are good friends, so I’m really happy that they give me the possibility to participate in the event in London. We will be waiting for of all you guys, come and join us at Cohesion, it will be a blast.
Thank you for your time. See you at Cohesion on 6th August.

CATHAR BIO:
Cathar is a brand new psychedelic music group formed by Steve Morley and Jessica B. Both have already enjoyed considerable success in their musical careers in the field of Trance. Steve Morley has been a record producer and DJ since 1992, and is a classically trained pianist and composer. Steve has a discography containing over 120 releases and countless remixes - on highly respected record labels. His love for Trance music saw him produce and play almost all the sub genres, and his affection for psychedelic music stems from the time he discovered Goa trance in the mid 90’s. Jessica B started producing and Djing in 2005 and instantly received recognition and praise for her first releases, which gained massive Radio 1 support. Not satisfied with being a producer and DJ, Jessica also co owns the Essential Recordings label - on which she has released her latest trance tracks. During her creative journey, Jessica discovered her love for psychedelic music and teamed up with Steve to form their new group. They are currently working hard on their first artist album and hope to present it to the world very soon!
