Vincent Garcia aka Savage Circuit has been a staple in the psychedelic trance scene for many years now; releasing under aliases: Savage Circuit, Sons Of Shiva and Pagan Technologies; on well respected labels Iono-Music and BMSS. His music has a very distinctive - infectious and brutal, yet captivating edge; interspersed with soaring penetrative lines that really blast you into outer space! With fresh beats about to be unleashed on psy-trance label Reincarnations Recordings on July 16th; we decided to delve deeper into the cauldron that cooks up this magic!
You were born and raised in Miami, Florida. Tell us about your childhood, when did music first feature in your life?
Very very early on. My older brother David is a musician and an engineer and was fanatical about music so I was exposed to really cool stuff at a young age. He would play ELP and Brain Salad Surgery with all of those insane Moog synth sounds. It was quite mind expanding at the age of five. Hahahaha. Or at any age really. Plus, he exposed me at a very early age to electric and acoustic instruments, as well as synthesizers. Music was and is magical, but at that formative stage in your life it seems so grandiose – larger than life.
How did your childhood experiences shape you into the person you are today; both artistically and personally?
Well, my Dad was an artist. He was a graphic designer and commercial artist by trade, but was a painter and drew brilliantly. He was always exposing me to art, comics, books, films. That and music had a profound effect on me. It really allowed me the feeling of freedom in being able to use my imagination; to think and feel. So on one end I've got my Dad throwing me all of this really cool visual stuff, and on the other, my older brother was rocking out at ear splitting volume with the tunes. Yeah. That will make you mutate for sure!
You majored in Audio Engineering at the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale where you studied Recording and Mixing. What made you choose to pursue this route? When did you first become interested in recording and mixing on such a deep level?
I knew I wanted to pursue production, and I think a classical engineering approach and technique are essential, if you want to get the best results. I learned by doing; you learn by doing. Theory can only go so far; you have to try yourself, which means you will invariably make a few mistakes along the way, but that's the process. Practice makes perfect.
What other musical genres have you immersed yourself in and what do you think it is about the psy-trance scene that grabbed you?
There is so much cool stuff out there it's hard to pin any one thing down. I'm a huge fan of film soundtracks – Hans Zimmer, Junkie XL, Vangelis, there is just so much. Anything Psychedelic obviously. With Psy it was just always the vibe, energy and musicality, and the intelligence. Very important. Plus the Psy style of fashion, art, lifestyle and mentality are just so perfect really.
You’ve lived in London, UK as well as Miami, Florida. What would you say are the important differences and similarities to you?
They are both hectic as f*ck. Hahahahaha!! In different ways for sure, but both demand a substantial amount of energy, and they can both be really intense. They are quite different though, especially regarding music.
How would you describe your sound?
Full on Psychedelic Trance.
You have an upcoming release on Reincarnations Recordings; Savage Circuit - ‘How Did We Get Here?’ released on July 16th. Tell us about the track as if you were describing it to an alien or someone with little knowledge of psy-trance?
It ponders the origin of the human species with a really thumping backbeat. Hahahahaha!!
How did we get here? ;-)
Aaaahhh. Maybe a trip to Puma Punku would be a good start for that question.
What would you say are the highlights and low lights of being an artist in your career so far?
Highlights are knowing the music is getting out there; and getting played; that it is well received. A nice gig, of course, is always a pleasure.
Lows. Seeming like it takes forever to get stuff out there, long after it has been finished and handed in. The usual thing people complain about I suppose.
What advice would you give, that you wish you had been given when you were first starting out an artist?
For God's sake: Don't Do It!! Lol ;-)
What is music to you?
The gateway to everything, knowledge, emotion, experience, pure magic. The greatest educator by far. It is the essence of consciousness wrapped in a candy coated sonic outer shell, all designed for the perfect moment.
You are a self-confessed ‘gear slut’ and have an envious studio set up. What’s your all-time favourite piece of kit and which is your most used item?
Everything here gets used for sure. I just got my Yamaha Ex5r back from the repair shop; it needed a power supply replacement. Man did I miss that thing. It's up and running nicely again and one of my favourites for sure. And the A6, the Voyager. Jeez. All of them really. I couldn't pick a desert island instrument, it would be too hard. I would just end up playing percussion on some coconuts. Lol! And don't forget the hollow logs for the bass and kick. Hahahaha!!
You also love to DJ, what goes through your mind when performing? Have you had any embarrassing moments behind the decks that you can now laugh about?
Hahahaha. So many funny moments! About 2 years ago outside a party my friend was having in Wynwood, Miami, which is the arts district here, something hysterical happened. I was playing and a truck crashed into a light post a hundred yards away. All of a sudden, these dodgy geezers ran out. One of them tried hiding behind the tent where we were set up with the decks while we were playing. Then the cops arrived, lights and sirens blaring and chased all of them down the block, and eventually caught all of them as they were all hiding in adjacent buildings. The police had blocked all of the roads, not allowing anyone into or out of the party until the suspects were apprehended! The perpetrators had stolen the truck you see, but they were caught red handed by the owner who saw them drive by in it. Hysterical! And all of this happening while we were jamming to Sonic Wave Control. We were like, whaaaaatttt???!!! Hahahaha! Funny.
What are your hopes and dreams for the future?
To see the human race, other animal species, and the planet get a fair shake ya know? We have to be mindful; we're all in this together.
If you could have one wish come true, what would it be?
To be the Lord Marshall on a Psy Trance Planet where the interplanetary party NEVER STOPS!!!
Vince - many thanks for doing this interview. Good luck with your release and progressing career! Big Love xx
