Tristan is the godfather of Psychedelic Trance - both off and on the dancefloor! Tristan’s mammoth and dedicated fanbase is a testament to the love and passion that he gives to every set he plays! And you’re just as likely to catch him ‘avin it in on dancefloor to his comrades’ sets along with all the other party animals! The number of happy, grinning, smiling faces that Tristan has been responsible for over the decades is countless; from looking at his cheery disposition I’d say what he gives to the scene he gets back ten-fold! I, for one, am super excited that he will be playing at the awesome long awaited Tribal Village 4 Day Festival in Kent on the 6-9th May 2022, so I decided to grab him in advance for a few quick quezzies!

Hey Tristan – it’s been a few years since we last did an interview catch up and a few things have changed since then! So firstly, how have you been? How did you manage your way through the Pandemic and lockdown?

Hi Jess, yes it’s been too long! I normally catch you on the dancefloor at UK psy events but there haven’t been many lately. I’m also out of London for a while now tucked into the bucolic West Country countryside. Lockdown was weirdly cosy here, buried in my studio and feeling like the rest of the planet was in cryogenic stasis!

What was your first gig after lockdown? Can you describe the journey? Excitement, eager anticipation, any anxiety? The airports looked quiet, was it a different experience or was it just like returning home, doing what you loved the most?

I had one outdoor gig in Hamburg where everyone was supposed to be socially distancing (can’t wait till that concept is forgotten) by sitting in deckchairs. Every time a big part of the track would drop everyone leaped into the air and went nuts! The security ran around like headless chickens trying to coral everyone back to their seats, even turning down the music, and 5 mins later it would happen all over again!! Ridiculous situation… but kind of amusing too!

You are a country boy now, having moved from London a few years ago. What’s your favourite bird song?

The call of the white barn owl that flies passed my window to hunt at dusk every evening; it’s haunting and beautiful and relatively rare these days.

I think you had a close call with some electricity cables at a recent(ish) event when you were leaping with such energy and enthusiasm… Can you relate the event to the readers?

Ha yeah, thanks for bringing that up!! ;-) I was playing my final track at a gig in Hilltop Goa, when suddenly the heavens opened and a huge rain storm started, very unseasonal in February. Seeing as it was the last track I thought I would dive over the console into the crowd and dance with the people in the pouring rain, however I caught my foot on a cable on the way through which meant I ended up landing on my head and pulling out the connections to the sound system killing the sound, and almost myself. Mental!

You are an absolute legend in the Psy-trance scene! People love you as a super talented artist and, as a really cool dude. What do you think it is you have that has enabled you to be such a successful artist for all these years that seems to resonate with the masses - the psy-trance family - so deeply?

I’ve transferred the money for this kind question into your account! ;-)
Honestly, I just try to be myself, issues and all, and be as kind, attentive and loving as possible. Fortunately, I find that not too hard to do most of the time, particularly at parties where there is so much love and good times happening.

In all the years I’ve known you I think I have rarely seen you grumble or even share the slightest moan. Is this a deliberate choice – to remain upbeat when you’re interacting and are you really a grumpster at home [joke!] ;-) Or is this your default?

I suppose I kinda answered that in the last question but to add to that, I just LOVE psychedelic music, Psytrance culture and can’t get enough of dancing!! It makes me feel good…

Looking back over the last few years, what is one huge stand out epic memory for you? Can you describe it to us?

New Year’s morning at Hilltop Goa with 7000 people going mental as the sunrise appeared is hard to beat. There are many incredible moments in this job, and that’s another reason why I try not to complain!! I mean who wants to listen to a moaning DJ?? Haha

What other styles of music do you enjoy aside from psy-trance? Who are some of your favourite non-psychedelic artists or bands?

One of the greatest apps ever invented for music lovers is Shazam. Wherever I am if I hear a killer tune, I Shazam it (I love the fact that it’s a verb now) and my growing Shazam playlist is full of the most epic and diverse tracks from every genre you can imagine. I don’t necessarily have a favourite band or artist, I’m just a lover of great music, of which there is an ocean of out there…

You’re playing at the awesome Tribal Village 4 Day Festival in Kent in May. What does this mean to you and what can people expect from your set? What are you looking forward to the most?

Like I said before there’s been a drought on events here, and as you know the UK crowd is a special bunch of nutters. So I ALWAYS look forward to parties here with great excitement! I think it’s going to be a real Banger. I’ve also got my brand-new album Crazy Wisdom which I’m gonna play there; extra anticipation to drop some monsters on the dancefloor

What words of wisdom would you say to your younger self if you could?

KEEP IT PSYCHEDELIC!!
