Following on from the huge success of their 10th anniversary party, Psy-Sisters return with their Spring Blast at Basing House featuring a fierce female DJ line up! After weeks of searching for the next generation of women and non-binary DJs, the collective announced their DJ competition winner ROEN who will join the line up on the 28th May 2023! Read on to find out all about ROEN and the other super-talented acts playing!
ROEN
Congratulations Roen on winning the Psy-Sisters DJ competition! Firstly, tell us about yourself - where were you born and what were your early experiences of music?
I was born in Slovakia. My family is very musical, both my dad and older brother play in bands, so music was part of my life ever since I remember. I started singing from a very early age which became my favourite way of musical expression. During my late teenage years, I learned to play guitar and was getting more into electronic music which later on resulted in getting my first DAW and learning about music production.
When did you first hear electronic dance music?
Hard to say for sure, but the first time I heard it live (apart from regular clubs) was at a Liquicity label Drum and Bass gig in Prague. I was around 16 years old and snuck out to go there with my friend and this got me fully hooked.
What attracted you to DJing?
I was first attracted to production and learnt this first. Even when witnessing great DJ acts, I never really focused on the mix itself, I was mainly analysing the songs. During Covid though I struggled to keep learning and became a little detached from it all. My music library kept growing though as I never stopped listening to new tracks. Last winter I was dealing with a few life challenges and needed a distraction, so I decided to re-engage with music again and started to learn mixing – and fell instantly in love.
Who are some of your favourite artists that have influenced you?
Top of the list is definitely Deadmau5. Then I’d say artists like Feed Me, Maduk, Rezz… There’s a lot of names in my head, but these guys are the ones who made me want to be involved and excited about the EDM scene.
What’s your favourite music event?
Loquiciry events, Psymera and of course Harder BABY Harder!
What can people expect from your set at Psy-sisters Spring Blast, on the 28th May at Basing House?
Energy
What are your musical aspirations for the future?
To get back into production
What does winning the Psy-Sisters DJ competition mean to you and how does it feel to join this great line up?
It honestly means so much. The opportunity to be part of a line up with artists I admire and follow is a massive honour to me. In such a male dominated scene, it’s never easy to be a female artist and many times it results in competing with one and other, so I really love the idea of Psy-Sisters uniting female DJs and I’m proud to be on board.

BAHAR CANCA
Can you describe Roen’s competition mix for us in 3 words?
Rocking, proper Psytrance!
What can people expect from your set at the Spring Blast event?
Banging full on vibes with organic and ethnic elements.
What does being part of Psy-Sisters mean to you?
Girl power and a ‘woman’s touch’ is well needed in our industry. I have been running events for the last 12 years and female promoters create a different energy without testosterone.
What’s your music highlight in 2023?
So many to choose from. My Top 3 would be - being more involved with Psy-sisters, getting the bookings for Noisily and Ozora Festival plus my killer house party for my recent birthday…

PSIBINDI
Can you describe Roen’s competition mix for us?
Roen’s winning mix is solid, groovy and dynamic. We are thrilled to have this rising star join our Spring Blast line up!
What can people expect from your set at the Spring Blast event?
I shall be spinning some fresh dance floor bangers from my favourite producers with smatterings of live Psy-FX vocals. I am super excited about this fierce line up and to be performing alongside: Bahar Canca, Shakti, Florescence, Amaluna, Bushy Squirrel and our DJ competition winner Roen! It is literally going to be a blast!
What does being part of Psy-Sisters mean to you?
I am immensely proud that Psy-Sisters is one of the longest serving platforms for amplifying gender diversity within the dance scene. For the past 10 years we have profiled hundreds of women and non-binary DJs. I love what we do, and I am still as passionate today about our ethos and community as I was when I first established the collective with the original founding Psy-Sisters in 2012. It is hugely rewarding that we are able to inspire the next generation of talent and be a positive force. Our recent DJ competition revealed that there is a lot of great hidden talent out there. We have now expanded our network of ‘under the radar’ women and non-binary DJs and will soon feature them all on our platform.
What’s your music highlight in 2023?
Psy-Sisters Spring Blast will be up there as one of my music highlights this year! DJ Neutron and I did a stomping B2B set at Harder Baby Harder and Twisted Frequencies. I am very excited to be performing a live vocal / DJ set at Solstice Festival in Netherlands next month. And I can reveal that I will be performing on the main stage at the mighty Hadra Festival in France this summer!

I just love everything that Psy-sisters stand for.

AMALUNA
Can you describe Roen’s competition mix for us in 3 words?
T: Fresh, funky and fullabass.
W: Uplifting, rock-solid, fun.
What can people expect from your set at the Spring Blast event?
T: We’re putting together a special prog set to blast us all into summer.
W: Indeed. Something truly reflective of the change in season. At long last we can give the grey and gloom a boot outa here. Good riddance! We won’t give too much away but expect something exciting and fresh - just like Spring!
What does being part of Psy-Sisters mean to you?
T: I love the fact that Rena and the crew have launched such an incredible global platform over the last 10 years. On a personal level, it’s all about being part of a supportive and inspiring collective of strong bad ass women who can achieve great things together.
W: Right! It’s truly an honour and a pleasure to be part of a close-knit collaboration, run by super-amazing women. Each brings their own unique abilities and top-notch skills to the table and it’s a wonderful thing to experience. Big thanks to Rena in particular for her outstanding organisation and guidance.
What’s your music highlight in 2023?
T: Well it’s only May so we can’t give too much away! Highlights so far have been Tribal Village’s 10th Birthday Anniversary Presents: The World Lounge Project at the Steel Yard and playing in Norwich for the very first time for Psylings. But, as they say, the best is always still to come, with Psy-Sisters Spring Blast!, Psymera Summer Boat Party and a surprise festival booking – but if we told you about that we’d have to kill you hehe.
W: Yes, we’re bursting with excitement about the summer festival appearance in particular, but alas it must remain a mystery for now. Watch this space! However echoing Tara’s comments, a celebratory start to the year made for a great kick-off, and now that we’re moving into summer, the annual Psymera Boat Party will make for great BBQ ‘n Boogie once again. You can catch us rocking the Sunshine Deck for all the usual fun and games this June.

Bushy Squirrel
Can you describe Roen’s competition mix for us in 3 words?
Sprightly, zestful and fiery!
What can people expect from your set at the Spring Blast event?
As the first DJ of the day, I plan on warming up gently and gradually becoming more energetic and bouncy, to loosen people up and get them dancing! I will be playing electronic music which will be more progressive in nature.
What does being part of Psy-Sisters mean to you?
I am honoured to be a part of this event and to participate with the Psy-sisters. It means a lot because of what Psy-sisters represent. They carry out important work in this industry, supporting gender minority artists and I'm so impressed with their high level of professionalism. They have stood by these values for 10 years, which is so impressive! It is incredibly empowering to perform with such talented and respected artists and be a part of such an impressive team.
What’s your music highlight in 2023?
I have been lucky enough to play a few gigs already this year. My highlight was playing for the Light On party which was a RA pick for the Easter BH weekend. It was held at Studio 9294 in Hackney Wick by Church of the Latter-day Raver, and it was a wonderful day with exceptional energy and beautiful people coming together to celebrate, dance and raise money for a very good cause.
