Yomanda Vs DJ Uto

» Kaminari

Label: You Clash
Format: CD-R
Genre: Euro Trance

Following their recent success with Got The Chance, Paul 'Yomanda' Masterson teams up with Japan's DJ Uto to bring us 'Kaminari' on You Clash Recordings!

The club mix begins with a healthy euro style kick drum and a low rythmic off beat synth pattern. The initial feel to the tune is quite 'electro tinged' as a mild scratching pattern and subtle percussion are slowly added as it progresses. Then an 'old skool' style sequence is introduced which isn't too overpowering but does give the tune a bit more venom (if you can call it that) before the start of the break.

The breakdown is very euphoric and creates an almost chillout mood with long synth string chords gently overlapping each other before some cool transient effects and a nice swoosh lead into the main riff. The melody keeps with the euro feel, with stabs building up over a whole phrase in stepping stone fashion before the kicks and percussion are thrown back into the mix. After a while, the cycle is repeated with the old skool sequence returning before the second break which is almost identical to the first except for a tougher drum fill sequence leading to the drop which does sound good but also makes the drop a bit anti-climactical.

The feel of the tune is generally uplifting but being honest there's not enough punch or details to make the tune sound 'different'! It's a 'trance by numbers' track which will sound best played VERY LOUD as I've found that when it's played quietly it struggles to keep your attention! Not sure this one has quite enough ooomph to make waves in clubland!Crying (very sad)

The dub is, in my opinion, the better of the two versions. It has a very similar beginning to the club mix but the use of more effects and some weirder funky sounds mean it sounds tougher.

The break remains the same, with long overlapping chords creating a mellow mood, but this time the drop goes straight into the old skool sequnce, with better use of various effects and less emphasis on the uplifting side to the track! I think this mix works better partly because the melody of the club mix doesn't really fit in very well with the tougher 'old skool' section. The dub eliminates this connection which gives it a more natural feel. It's still a fairly basic mix and again will find it hard to 'cut it' on the dancefloor but at least there is an alternative mix for those who could slot it into their sets!

Overall, a fairly dissappointing release. After 'Got The Chance' I think the expectancy levels were slightly higher. The dub saves this release from a really low mark but unfortunately I feel this will struggle in most aspects of it's clubland life! But I hope i'm proved wrong!

Confused Confused Confused

I suppose if its play-listed on Radio 1, it could be big. Big grin

I wouldn't write that off either, what with Jules being tight with Paul so it's a definite posibility. I wouldn't mind hearing it out on a loud system. It would probably rock (especially the dub)! That might push the rating up a bit too!
