Greg Brookman & Serge / Craig Paxton

» Narconoise EP - Frozen / Audio Syncrasy

Reviewed by Gordon Darley / Submitted 11-06-04 11:30

Label: Nukleuz Purple
Format: 12" Vinyl
Genre: Hard Trance

Well well well, what do we have here? It’s the first release on Nukleuz from their brand spanking new, clever-clogs new in-house producer, Mr Greg Brookman. I think it’s now safe to say that this guy has branded his name safely on the arse of hard dance, following in the footsteps of Nick Sentience and BK by being left to run amok in the hallowed studios in Clapham, but is The Narconoise EP worthy of our attention?

On the A side, Greg has teamed up with Manchester lad Serge, whose name you may or may not recognise, to create Frozen!! The lads have gone for all out hard trance mayhem with this one; building nicely with all the quirky little noises and effects that are always there in one of Brookman’s tracks. When the bass drops you automatically know this is a strong track, with great percussion, and solid effects that you can get really wrapped up in. It chugs along extremely nicely up to the breakdown, where a piano riff is introduced, fluffing up proceedings quite a bit. From what I’ve heard, this piano part was played and recorded live as you hear it in the track, and very well done to, it fades away just before the main riff. You’ll wet yourself. That’s the simplest way to put it. It was made for the big room, no doubt about it, pure, unadulterated hard trance at it’s most powerful. When it kicks back in, the tune is given a kick up the arse you wouldn’t think possible and is left to thunder along. Expect this to be the tune of this summer. It’ll blow you away. 9/10

Onto the flip now for another collaboration, this time with Scotsman, Craig Paxton. As for as I’m aware this is Craig’s first ever release, and what a way to introduce yourself. This duo have come up with something very special in my opinion, and my personal favourite on the EP, Audio Syncrasy. A big fat chugger of a tune with a groove to make anybody’s bum shake. The massive kick thumping right the way from the word go gives you the impression you’re going to stomp ‘til your legs fall off with this one, and the chirpy little (and slightly bigger) sounds accompanying the funky bass are different, and very well done. Hints of the main riff are introduced before the breakdown, where it comes in subtly, and builds steadily being filtered and other fx being added along the way. Then the breakbeat comes with some really warm subs that’ll make the hairs on the back of your neck stand straight away. Before the drop things just go mad – averything goes up to downright organised chaos until you hear the snap of a few well placed snares, and the tunes drops again, and keeps going on til the very end. Audio Syncrasy for me, personally, has everything I look for in music, depth, a groove, it’s uplifting, and most of all, proper banging!! Ave it!! etc…. 10/10

Narconoise promos should be available in record shops very soon Wink
Thumbs up
